Product Descriptions That Rank and Sell

Most product descriptions tell people what a product is. The best ones make people want to own it — and make sure Google surfaces it to the right buyers first.

I’m Brandi Marcene — an eCommerce copywriter with 12+ years of experience writing product descriptions that are built for search and written for conversion. I write for Shopify stores, Amazon listings, WooCommerce sites, and multi-channel eCommerce brands that need product copy that works harder than a manufacturer spec sheet.

What Is Website Copywriting?

What Is Website Copywriting — And Why Does It Matter for Your Business?

Bad website copy does neither. It’s either stuffed with keywords that read like a robot wrote it, or it’s so focused on sounding polished that it forgets to actually sell. Professional website copywriting sits at the intersection of SEO strategy and conversion psychology — and that intersection is where revenue is made.
Your website copy determines:

Most business owners are experts in what they do — not in writing the words that sell what they do. That’s not a weakness. It’s exactly why hiring a professional website copywriter is one of the highest-ROI investments your business can make.

What’s Included in My Product Description Writing Service

What You Get for Every Product Description

Every product description I write is a complete, strategically considered piece of conversion copy — not a template fill-in. Here’s what’s standard on every order:

Keyword Research Per Product I identify the primary and secondary search terms buyers use for your product category and build each description around them. No keyword guesswork — research-led placement.
Unique Description Every description is written from scratch for your specific product and store. No manufacturer copy. No duplicate content. No AI bulk generation with no human review.
Conversion-Focused Structure Each description follows a proven structure: hook (lead with the benefit), body (features as benefits), sensory detail (help the reader imagine ownership), and close (remove the objection to purchase).
Platform-Specific Formatting Shopify descriptions have different requirements to Amazon listings — character limits, bullet structures, keyword placement, and backend search term fields. I write for the platform you’re selling on.
SEO Title & Meta Description Where relevant, I write the SEO product page title and meta description alongside the body copy — the full SERP package for each listing.
Brand Voice Consistency All descriptions match your established brand voice — whether that’s technical and authoritative, warm and conversational, or premium and aspirational. Consistency across a catalogue builds brand trust.
Revision Round One revision pass is included per batch. Revisions cover tone, keyword adjustment, factual updates, and platform formatting changes. Scope agreed before the project starts.
Delivery Format Google Sheet or CSV file formatted for direct import into your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon Seller Central). No manual copying required.

The Problem With Most Product Descriptions

What Weak Product Descriptions Are Actually Costing Your Store

The default product description for most eCommerce stores is either copied from the manufacturer, written in five minutes by someone on the team, or generated in bulk by an AI tool with no knowledge of the buyer. The result is one of three outcomes — and none of them are good for your conversion rate:

The spec sheet problem

‘Material: 100% cotton. Dimensions: 30x40cm. Available in three colours.’ Technically accurate. Completely useless for conversion. Spec sheets tell buyers what a product is. Good product descriptions make buyers picture owning it, using it, and feeling good about that decision. Specs belong in the product attributes section. Your description needs to do the selling.

The manufacturer copy problem

If your product description is the same text that appears on every other retailer’s website carrying the same product, Google’s duplicate content filter means your page is invisible in search results. You’re also giving buyers no reason to choose your store over any of the others they’re browsing. Original, unique product copy is not optional — it’s the minimum requirement for visibility and conversion.

The keyword void problem

Product descriptions that aren’t written around the search terms your buyers use don’t appear in search results for those terms. This is the most common and most expensive mistake in eCommerce SEO. Buyers searching for ‘organic cotton baby sleepsuit UK’ or ‘professional grade chef’s knife under $100’ are commercial-intent searchers ready to buy. If your product description doesn’t include those terms naturally, your listing isn’t getting found.

Benefits of Professional Product Description Writing

What Professionally Written Product Descriptions Do for Your Store

Professionally written product descriptions help your store attract more buyers, improve search visibility, and turn product views into consistent sales.

Higher Rankings for Commercial Search Terms

Product descriptions written around the specific search terms your buyers use — with correct keyword density, natural language, and semantic variation — rank higher for those terms than duplicate or keyword-void copy. More visibility means more traffic from buyers who are already ready to purchase.

Higher Conversion Rate from Existing Traffic

Getting traffic to a product page is half the job. The other half is converting it. Product descriptions written with conversion psychology — leading with benefits over features, addressing the purchase objection, and giving buyers the confidence to add to cart — consistently outperform generic descriptions on conversion rate. Even a 1% improvement in conversion rate across a catalogue has significant revenue impact.

Reduced Returns Through Accurate Expectation-Setting

One of the leading causes of eCommerce returns is a mismatch between what a buyer expected and what they received. Product descriptions that are accurate, specific, and complete — without being dry or spec-heavy — set the right expectations before purchase and reduce the return rate that kills eCommerce margins.

Brand Consistency Across Your Catalogue

A catalogue where every product has a different voice, structure, and quality level signals an unprofessional operation to buyers who browse multiple listings. Consistent, professional product copy across your catalogue builds the kind of brand credibility that turns first-time buyers into repeat customers.

Content Your Competitors Haven’t Written

Most eCommerce stores in any given category have identical or near-identical product descriptions. Original, researched, buyer-focused copy is a genuine competitive differentiator — and one that compounds over time as your product pages accumulate organic search history, backlinks, and conversion data.

Writing & QA

All descriptions written, QA-checked for platform compliance, brand voice consistency, keyword placement, and character limits. Delivered in batches for large projects

Can you write Amazon product descriptions that comply with Amazon’s content policies?

Yes. Amazon has specific requirements for listing copy: title character limits, prohibited claims (especially for health and wellness products), required keyword placement, bullet point structure, and HTML restrictions in the product description field. I’ve written Amazon listings across multiple categories and I’m familiar with the content policy constraints that apply to each. For regulated categories (supplements, medical devices, children’s products), I build compliance review into the brief process. I cannot guarantee Amazon will approve any specific listing — that is always at Amazon’s discretion — but the copy I produce follows their published guidelines.

I write the visible listing copy — title, bullet points, and product description. For Amazon specifically, I also provide a recommended backend search term list (up to 250 bytes) based on the keyword research conducted for your product category. You enter these yourself in Seller Central under the ‘keywords’ tab. If you want me to complete a full Amazon SEO audit and backend keyword strategy for an existing catalogue, that is a separate project — ask when you enquire.

At minimum: a product list with names and any existing descriptions or spec sheets, your target platform, your target audience, and your brand voice guide (or examples of copy you consider on-brand). For product categories I’m not immediately familiar with, I may ask for sample products, manufacturer documentation, or a short call to discuss the product in detail. The more context you give me about who buys your product and why they love it, the more specific and persuasive the copy will be. A completed buyer persona or customer review data (e.g. Amazon reviews for similar products) is particularly useful input.

Both. If you have existing descriptions that are underperforming — either in search ranking, conversion rate, or brand consistency — I can rewrite them using the same process as a new project: keyword research, conversion structure, and brand voice alignment. The rate for rewrites is the same as for new descriptions — the research and strategic input required is identical regardless of whether there’s existing text to reference. Sometimes a rewrite is faster than starting from scratch; sometimes it’s more efficient to discard the original entirely. I’ll tell you honestly which approach is better for your specific catalogue.

Ready to Write Product Descriptions That Rank, Convert, and Build Your Brand?

Every product in your catalogue is a selling opportunity. Generic descriptions are leaving that opportunity on the table — for every buyer who can’t find your listing in search, and every visitor who lands and bounces because the copy didn’t give them a reason to buy.
Get in touch today with your product list, your platform, and your volume. I’ll review it and send you a fixed-price quote within 24 hours — broken down by description type so you can see exactly what you’re investing in and why.
